Hands off our tea

Perhaps no people take their tea as seriously as the Brits, and that passion was on full display late in the summer of 2011, when tea maker Twinings announced it would be tweaking the flavour of its Earl Grey tea. The 300-year-old company decided to update its 180-year-old offering, infusing the stodgy, old flavour with “a dash of lemon and a touch more bergamot.” This, of course, was a big no-no to the most passionate tea drinkers, and a rabid campaign began to reverse the change. Just weeks later, after many customers likened the new tea’s taste to household cleaner, Twinings went back on its recipe adjustment and reverted to its original Earl Grey flavour.
