CEO lies on his resumé

People exaggerate on their resumés here and there. Maybe you bump up your grade-point average a little, or add a little flourish to past job descriptions.

A CEO, however, should never lie on his resumé, especially about getting a degree that didn't exist. But that's what led to Scott Thompson's ouster at Yahoo (YHOO). As part of what became known as Resumégate, a major shareholder found out that Thompson did not earn a bachelor's degree in accounting and computer science from a small New England college.

Stonehill College in Easton, Mass., didn't even offer computer science degrees until four years after Thompson's graduation. And Yahoo found itself in the painful position of admitting that Thompson's bio was wrong. Thompson got a bachelor's degree in business administration with a major in accounting, the company said, calling it "an inadvertent error."

Yahoo tried to calm the ensuing drama, and Thompson apologized to employees, but in the end he had to go.
